Hitchcock presents Daniels Brenner's mom Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette, who plays his ex- girlfriend Annie long before events take place. The suspense is heightened by Hitchcock taking time to establish the relationship between these two characters. Jessica Tandy's portrayal as Brenner's mother Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette's portrayal as Annie the ex-girlfriend of Brenner, are both unforgettable. The screenplay was created by the popular writer Evan Hunter, better known by his name, Ed McBain, from a novella by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock used electronic sounds instead of a musical score to great effect. Hitchcock investigated a mysterious attack on Capitola in the state of California in the year 1961, caused by sooty Shearwaters and believed it to be caused by diatom poisoning caused by anchovies they had consumed, leading to an extreme level of aggression.
